Serious Play and Bowen Shares Canvas Exchange

Serious Play has a goal for ‘Bowen Shares’ next visit. We would like to send an Artist’s quality canvas, acrylic paints and brushes to all 120 children. Don’t worry Jen, it won’t be too heavy. For many of the children at the orphanage this will be the first time that they have seen or used these materials. While the children at the orphanage are painting in Ghana, Africa so are the children on Bowen Island, British Columbia. Serious Play and Bowen Shares will exchange the artwork and exhibit the paintings of two groups of children connected through Art.

Serious play is dedicated to bringing quality art supplies and lessons to many children. If you would like to make a monetary donation to support this project or the subsidy of art classes for children here on Bowen Island please contact Saffron Gurney, owner and operator of Serious Play Studio, at saffron@seriousplaystudio.ca. Serious Play Supplies In Ghana, Africa

These children are from the Royal Seed Orphanage in Ghana, Africa. This orphanage is home to about 120 children who range in age between six weeks and 15 years old. These children are housed, fed and clothed at the orphanage. The orphanage is unique for it also has a much needed educational setting for their young children.

In December 2008, Serious Play Studio sent paints, paper, brushes, glue, stickers, pencils, crayons, and felt pens to the orphanage. Serious Play is working with an organization called ‘Bowen Shares’ made up of a handful of Bowen island residents who are stationed in Ghana, Africa to get much needed supplies and funds to the orphanage. Jennifer Henrichsen is Serious Play’s direct link to the Royal Seed Orphanage; our supplies literally travel with Jennifer each time she returns to Ghana.

Five new activities have been created to develop children’s sewing skills. Sew-A-Brooch, Sew 2 People, Sew-A Garden, Sew-A-Flower, and Make-A-Fairy kits use hand died wools and colorful die cut felt shapes to create these beautiful projects. All buttons, embroidery thread and needles are supplied in each kit. These kits are beautiful, affordable, minimaly packaged and make great gifts.

Christmas Kit

This is my favorite kit especially for ages 2-6. There are three flat wooden ornaments that look terrific painted and hung on the tree or given as a handmade gift. The six metalic paints are washable, shiny and permanent. The six well paint container has a lid for each color to preserve the paint between projects. The ornaments can be decorated with the glue and festive confetti included for a finishing touch. These are treasures that will adorn the tree year after year. $35

Craft-A-Card Kit

Paint-A-Beach Kit

This kit contains artist quality materials for serious painters of all ages. Three canvases (4″x6″, 6″x6″, 8″x10″) are stretched over wooden frames and ready to hang on the wall. The six acrylic colors have been chosen that best represent the range of colors found where the water meets the sky.
